About

Elizabeth Whitman

Elizabeth formed Whitman Music Law because she believes that musicians deserve an entertainment attorney who shares their passion and supports their uniqueness and career growth. A conservatory-trained multi-instrumentalist with decades of experience as a business attorney and a graduate certificate in music business law and policy,  Elizabeth is uniquely qualified to develop personalized music business solutions that support musicians’ short- and long-term career goals.

A lifelong learner who is continuously working to improve both her legal and musical knowledge and skills, Elizabeth studies music business at Berklee College of Music and applied music at Levine Music in Washington, DC. She also is a member of the Entertainment and Sports Industry Forum of the American Bar Association.

Elizabeth has taught many legal education courses for organizations such as BARBRI, Strafford, NBI, ACC, and the Virginia Bar. She also has appeared as a podcast speaker and frequently been quoted in articles about legal issues. Since 2018, she has authored the award-winning Bach to Business blog, which uses music examples to explain legal concepts.

When she’s not practicing law, Elizabeth often can be found in a rehearsal or a practice room or listening to music. Devoted to sharing her love of music with others, Elizabeth performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra member. She also serves as a member of the Board of Governors and Outreach Director for FMMC, for which she coordinates nearly 100 free community music performances every year in the DC Metro area. A believer that musicians should focus on physical and mental health, Elizabeth also enjoys swimming, Pilates, yoga, reading, organic gardening, and spending time with her husband, son, and rescue cats.
